from Philzone.com rumor section

Phall Phil?
Rumors have surfaced that a P&F Fall Tour is imminent. It's way too early for details but we've heard Albany, NY is a potential stop. Certainly we'd expect heavy East Coast tour action as usual & maybe (please pray with us) some Red Rocks dates to kick it all off and some West Coast dates to encore the tour!

2007 - More Phil in 2007? Hunger Pangs Echo Among Phans
So everyone's wondering and emailing asking - will there be any P&F Summer Tour? It looks unlikely. Maybe, just maybe we'll get a few more random dates this Summer.

Rumors persist about a possible Dead reunion a la Terrapin Station sometime this Summer. Phans have been craving such an even for a couple of years now. Every Summer this rumor crops up - maybe next Summer it'll actually happen.

Families stay between one to four months. Many of the children are not enrolled in a local school and
need a place to go during the day. Homeward Bound provides a teacher for a classroom that serves children from Pre-School through High School. They serve approximately 15 children per week.

The shelter had one classroom for the children in an adjacent motel which has been recently sold.
Now they need to move and create a new classroom.

Our mission will be to convert a room into a small but attractive and functional classroom.

Here's how you can help:

You can join us on this worthwhile project by helping UBC buy materials,
supplies and furnishing and pitch in to do the refurbishing of the room.

We're looking for no more than 24 people to help (8 per day on July 5, 6, 7).

We're also asking for $250.00 (per person / per day) to help pay for the costs of this project.

It's not all work:

On July 8th those of you who have joined our project are invited to an
intimate party from 5:00 to 10:00 P.M. at a beautiful private residence in Marin.

There you will enjoy adult beverages and a barbeque chicken dinner. (Veggie burger optional).

After dinner, relax and enjoy some music with Phil and some of his great friends.

If you join the project you may bring one additional, non working, person to the party.
The cost for your guest is $125.00

You need to know:

It's work (we estimate approximately 5 or 6 hours each day).

Tasks include: skilled painters (artistically inclined a +), carpentry, laying 12' by 12" floor tiles,
installing cabinets, deep cleaning, hanging light fixtures, making and/or hanging curtains,
general labor, errands, coffee, heavy duty handy person skills, power washer.

Are you a really great paint scraper or sidewalk washer?
We can use you! You'll probably get dirty!

Please note:

You will need to bring a lunch on your day, UBC will provide water.

Selection of participants is solely at the discretion of Unbroken Chain Foundation. Those selected will be notified by phone and/or email. Please include as many ways to contact you as possible.

Any and all travel, lodging, and other expenses are
the sole responsibility of those chosen to help with the project.

Neither Phil Lesh, Cygnus Productions, or Unbroken Chain Foundation will be responsible for any delays or inability to attend the event due to travel arrangements, weather or other circumstances. By volunteering for this project you also agree to release and hold harmless Phil Lesh, Cygnus Productions, Unbroken Chain Foundation, Homeward Bound of Marin and/or the property owner for any injury to you, without limitation, that may occur in the course of your work on the project. You may be asked to sign a specific liability waiver on the day of the project. If you are under 18 you will need to have a parent or guardian sign any waiver required.

Here's how to sign up:

Send a brief email to bbq@phillesh.net
Tell us why you'd like to help and what skills you can bring to the project.
(Most any skills are welcome).

Grateful Dead Day 2007

The Scoop: Ithaca Mayor Declares May 8 Grateful Dead Day

The Associated Press
Ithaca — In honor of the 30th anniversary of one of the Grateful Dead's most legendary performances that took place on May 8, 1977 at Cornell University's Barton Hall, Ithaca Mayor Carolyn Peterson will declare May 8, Grateful Dead Day in Ithaca.

The headlining event of this anniversary celebration is Dark Star Orchestra's recreation of the Legendary May 8, 1977 Grateful Dead concert.

Tickets for Dark Star Orchestra are on sale now. They are $24.50 in advance or $26.50 at the door. Go online at www.stateofithaca.com, by phone at 273-4497, or in person at The Ticket Center at Clinton House located at 116 North Cayuga St. in downtown Ithaca or at the Theatre on the day of the show to purchase a ticket.

The Mayors Proclamation is as follows:

Proclamation from the Mayor of the City of Ithaca

Whereas, the Grateful Dead have been recognized by many highly credible organizations, individuals and entities including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as significantly important and integral to the musical and social fabric of our contemporary culture, and whereas, on May 8th, 1977 the Grateful Dead performed in Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University in the city of Ithaca New York, a concert that is widely acknowledged and regarded as a defining and transcendent occasion and example of the art of contemporary musical improvisation, collaboration, musicianship, and performance, and whereas, many tens of thousands of individuals who were not in attendance that night in Barton Hall, have become knowledgeable & familiar with the extraordinary nature of the performance on May 8th 1977 through the trading and sharing of recordings of the show, and whereas, the cultural identity and perceptions of Ithaca as a community, have been informed and bolstered by the widespread acknowledgement of the magic of May 8th, 1977, and whereas, it has been said many times by many people that, "there is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert."

Now therefore, be it resolved that as Mayor of the City of Ithaca, and in heartfelt recognition of the thirtieth anniversary of the May 8th 1977 concert performance, I declare May 8th 2007 as Grateful Dead Day in the City of Ithaca.

2007 Rumors

from philzone.com

Sorry, we don't have anything solid to report right now except that we have heard reliable rumors that Phil will do *something* this year and *not* maintain an overextended hiatus after his successful fight against prostate cancer. He'll be at Slims on 2.9 but what else? Rumors are starting to circulate about a possible P&F tour with the Allman Brothers Band. Another rumor has it that Phil is planning a summer tour with Bob Weir and Trey that will cross the country twice consisting of a total of sixty shows (supposedly a third will be on the East coast). Rumors continue to say that John Molo will be on drums and on the keys - Steve Winwood! Allegedly there will be a revolving door of opening bands. If rumors are true, they will be playing primarily stadiums where the parking lots will open very early every day and fans wil be allowed to camp overnight. Hang tight - we'll get our Phil!

Since my liver transplant, my health has been
monitored by a crack team of doctors; in the course of
this program, I have periodic blood tests and clinic
visits. At my last clinic, my doctor noticed that my
PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) levels had increased
over the last period. He recommended that I see a
urologist, and a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. I
have decided to have it removed in early December with
da Vinci robotic surgery. Since we’ve caught it very
early, and it’s small and slow-growing, I fully expect
to have a rapid and complete recovery.

I am feeling energetic as always, and all my scheduled
appearances will occur as planned.

As you know, I urge everyone to become an organ donor
to help save lives. Now, I am also urging all men:
speak to your doctor about having periodic regular PSA
screening for early detection of prostate cancer- you
may save your own life.

Phil Gets Sirius

Phil Lesh is already a noted musician and author, but this Thursday the Grateful Dead bassist will be able to add DJ to his resume. From 1 to 7 PM Thursday, Lesh will host his own six-hour radio show on Sirius Jam_On (the satellite radio station’s channel 17). In addition to choosing the afternoon’s playlist, Lesh is expected to discuss the latest incarnation of Phil Lesh and Friends and shed some light on the Grateful Dead’s future plans. As of press time, Lesh’s only confirmed live date in an appearance at the fifth annual Bonnaroo Music Festival in June.

Family Trips

A forthcoming Discovery Channel/TLC program is searching for old school Dead Head parents and their progeny. The call is out for "families who have children now between the ages of 25 and 45 who raised them on tour or did a lot of traveling to shows while they were growing up." The casting department for the program adds, "If this description fits your family at all and you have pictures or home movies from when you all were traveling-please send me an email about your family with a picture if you have one!" Send your email to familytripcasting@gmail.com. Aside from the supreme glory of being featured on a Discovery Channel/TLC program, the show's producers pledge to "send 10 lucky families to relive a trip from the past." (and in a mildly-related manner, we at Jambands.com offer our salutations to staff writer/copy editor Randy Ray, who has just learned that he will add a pair of twins to his growing brood- even if his son Conor doesn't quite yet constitute a brood).

ryan adams is phil's friend (sometimes)

After pulling out of his proposed Vegoose appearance with Phil Lesh, Ryan Adams made a surprise return to the Friends-fold Thursday night at San Francisco’s Fillmore Auditorium. But, while his microphone stand was already prepared for second show with Lesh at San Francisco’s Warfield on December 30, Adams missed yet another appearance at reportedly due to food poisoning. Despite his absence, and lonely stage equipment, Lesh ran through a number of Adams’ best known material including "Sweet Illusions," "Magnolia Mountain" and "Rescue Blues," with Joan Osborne supplying lead vocals.

By the next day Adams had made a lighting quick recovery, joining Lesh and his Friends for their entire set at the Bill Graham Civic Center for Dead-classics like "Uncle John’s Band," "Sugaree," "Fire on the Mountain" and "Candyman," at which time Osborne moved behind the drum kit. At midnight, which arrived shortly before Lesh’s second set, a woman riding on a giant swan descended from the ceiling, alongside bubbles and a caveman who counted down to 2005 by pounding his weapon-like stick on the stage. At midnight, pyrotechnics and other air candy welcomed 2006 in style. In lieu of a traditional encore, Lesh offered fans a surprise third set which featured "Wharf Rat," "Ripple" and Adams' "Peaceful Valley" among others compositions.

Just got back from the show. I love Phil he always seems to be having more fun then anyone... audience included. Phil was also in good voice tonight. The rest of the band was also really on tonight.

John Scofield fit in amazingly well particulary whenever things got spacey. I love to listen to Sco, he's an amazing guitarist. (Check out his Album A Go-go where he's backed by Martin, Medeski and Wood)

The crowd was really into the show and showing their love, singing along with favorites like Friend of the Devil, U.S. Blues and The Wheel. Phil really ate up all the good vibes and amplified it right back at us.

A highlight for me was the cover of the Beatles "Hide your love away" sung by Chris. I don't know, maybe because its my favorite Beatles song and a Lennon song at that (with all the 25th aniversary of his murder stuff in the news he's been on my mind this week.) Another Chris highlight was Midnight Hour. He tried to switch from his acoustic guitar to an electric durring the jam in the second set but seemed to have some sort of problem with it (did anyone else notice this?)

I really have to mention Barry Sless's beautiful pedal steel work; John Molo's crisp drumming; Mookie Seigel's keyboards... I really don't want to leave anyone out since this is a terrific band.

Anyway to finish this up; I'd never been to the Albany Armory before (its a fairly new venue for shows) and its a really nice place. The wood floor and roof provide decent enough acoustics and its not too big not too small size makes it very comfortable. ( I really wish I'd written down the set list its all jumbled in my head now)

Announcement from Phil re: New Years

November 8, 2005

An Announcement from Phil Lesh:

Last year, I promised to bring back the original concept of Phil Lesh & Friends: bringing in different musicians to provide fresh perspectives on the music. I had originally planned to mix up the lineup after New Years - but it turns out that, in order to take advantage of other musical opportunities that have come his way, Jimmy Herring will now be moving on a little earlier. I¹m sure that his new musical experiences will result in further growth, which is vital to a musician.

Larry Campbell will be replacing Jimmy with Phil & Friends. Larry is a veteran of Bob Dylan¹s great band, and one of the premier guitarists and multi-instrumentalists of the age. One of the great joys of music making is to be challenged and inspired by a wide range of artistic visions. I look forward to Larry¹s joining the long line of influences and inspirations that have contributed not only to the music itself, but also to my personal musical development.
NOLA Jazz Fest Is Going To Happen!

2005 Jazzfest by Zack Smith
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival should take place on its traditional last weekend of April/first weekend of May, according to Quint Davis, producer/director of the annual event.
"Our intention is to do it April 28 - May 7 at the fairgrounds," Davis said last week in an interview with the Sun-Times. "We're hoping to have official announcement that it's a 'go' before Christmas. All the hotel rooms in New Orleans, with the exception of the Ritz, Fairmont and Hyatt, are projected to be open. We've heard in excess of 25,000 hotel rooms will be available."

Davis downplayed a Nov. 12 New Orleans Times-Picayune report that mentioned the Rolling Stones, Elton John and others who played Hurricane Katrina benefits, might appear at this year's 37th annual festival.

"That's premature," Davis said. "We haven't secured any talent. The guys in that article were being a little enthusiastic. It is true we are not planning to downsize the festival. It will be full scale."

Typically, Jazz Fest headliners are booked by early November. This is not a typical year.

Last year's Jazz Fest was the first since Churchill Downs, which stages the annual Kentucky Derby, purchased the fairgrounds - the festival site. Davis was hesitant to place a bet on the condition of the fairgrounds.

"They got a lot of damage, but they're OK," he said. "The grandstand received extensive damage. Until we start going through the drainage and electrical systems on the field, we don't know how much of that is operable."

Davis took in last month's Jimmy Buffett concert at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where Buffett announced that Jazz Fest will be back. But the real question remains, "Is the Crawfish Monica booth OK?"

"Crawfish Monica, that I can confirm," Davis said with a laugh.

He then added, "Spread the word."
